Our Fears And Hopes

Written in Turkish by Prof. Dr. Soner DUMAN

Translated into English by Hayat Yakup ARICIOĞLU

There are many cases in life of which human cannot make head nor tail.

For example, people are not created equally by force of the test. Some people have the blessings such as health, wealth, beauty, being with the family and kin whereas the others suffer from problems like ilness, poverty, some physical disabilities, loss of family members, homesickness.

Even though it seems like an advantage to have blessings, the thing is that the more blessings you have, the more you are afraid of losing them.

If you are healthy, you are afraid of losing your health, having an incurable disease or, even if it is curable, bustling around the hospitals for a long time.

If you are wealthy, you are afraid of becoming poor one day, losing your house and car or your comfortable lìfe.

If you are with your loved ones, you are afraid of losing them one day.

If all these fears go beyond normal limits, they can cause a crisis for the individual and make life unbearable. And he starts to live in fear, saying, “Something bad is going to happen to me.”

What about those who do not have a blessing?

Even though it seems like a disadvantage at first glance, the thing is that the further are blessings from you, the more you hope to have.

If you are sick, you hope to regain your health one day. There are a lot of people in their bed right now, hoping to stand up and walk one day.

If you are poor, you hope to reach a state of comfort. If you are a tenant, you hope to find a place to live. While using the crowded buses and minibuses, you hope to have a car that will content you one day.

If you are away from your loved ones, in a foreign land, you hope for the end of the absence from home and wish for the reunion.

All these hopes keep you alive, make you appreciate life, give you the joy of living.

And for this reason, there are many people who are deprived of blessings but a lot happier by help of this hope than those who are given enormous blessings.

One who lives in a rented house might be happier and more comfortable owing to this hope than the one who lives in a villa with pool.

Through this hope, one who lays in his hospital bed might be happier than the one who sleeps in his feather bed at home.

If you have a blessing in your hand, keep hold of it. If you ask the question, “How can I do this?”, look what our Rabb says:

“And, (remember) when your Rabb proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you (in favour); but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’” (Ibrahim, 7)

So, if you give thanks, you take a step to hold the blessing. If the blessing is a bird, gratitude is its cage.

If you are deprived of a blessing, show patience and hope without rebelling at Allah.

No matter if you are blessed or deprived, never leave gratitude and patience. If you do this, both the blessedness and deprivation turn into hayr for you. Look what the Rasulullah (sas) says:

“Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affair is good and this is not for no one except the believer. If something of good/happiness befalls him he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him he is patient and that is good for him.” (The Book of Zuhd and Softening of Hearts, 13)

May our Rabb make us His (swt) slaves who show gratitude when blessed and show patience when deprived, thus reach the consent of Him.
