There Is No Small Thing

Sometimes, a word, an action, or a particular bearing can cause such an enormous change that you cannot even imagine!

Most of the time, we think our tests will be full of big events. Wars, loss of loved ones, accidents, great richness and poverty, disasters, or great joy… However, this is a delusion.

An action we do not care, a word told without paying much attention can become our Paradise or Hell. This truth can be seen in a lot of hadith from the Messenger of Allah. A woman becomes worthy of Paradise after filling her shoe from a well and watering a thirsty dog.  A woman becomes worthy of Hell after starving a cat to death. Although he is known as a martyr, a man becomes worthy of Hell after stealing a small thing. A hadith states “Save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity”. There are many examples of this in the sunnah, too. An action we do not care, a word told without paying much attention can become our Paradise or Hell.

One of the events that affected me the most is the one Aisha told as following:

A poor woman came to me carrying her two daughters. I gave her three date-fruits. She gave a date to each of them, and then she took up one date-fruit and brought that to her mouth to eat, but her daughters asked her that also. She then divided between them the date-fruit that she intended to eat. This (kind) treatment of her impressed me and I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah who said, 'Verily, Allah has assured Jannah for her, because of (this act) of her," or said, "He (SWT) has rescued her from Hell- Fire".

See? What you call a test is not always with tons of gold and silver. What you call a test is not always a matter of life or death in warfare. Every moment of our life can make us worthy of Paradise or Hell, may Allah protect from it.

Actually, it is about being a human. It was not that date-fruit that made her worthy of Paradise, it was

the compassion and mercy in her heart. Date-fruit was just an instrument.

So?

Kicking that cat at the corner can lead to hellfire.

Being up all night for your sick child can lead to your sins being forgiven.

Pray from that old lady you gave your seat on the bus can make you worthy of Paradise.

That piece of bread you saw on the ground and put somewhere else so people won’t step on it…

Complaining to your old sick dad and treating him angrily can deplete all your good deeds you have done throughout your life.

Not cheering up for your high score in an exam after seeing your friend sad for his low score…

Walking away when you see someone who is in debt to you so that he would not be embarrassed…

Helping that snotty orphan everyone disdains, cherishing him, buying him a bagel can get you into the list of people Allah is satisfied with.

That sadness when you see someone in need but realising your pockets are empty can uplift you to Firdous!

No need for fancy words.

Do not think it is just a date-fruit! That date can be your Paradise or Hell!
